Brief
Design an appropriate and original typographic based solution to a chapter of the New Zealand Artist Ralph Hotre's book Blacklight.
Solution
The challenge with such a project is to create beautiful flowing typography that highlights the artists work. It needs to reflect elements and themes of the work.
The Rotis type family was chosen for the book with large variety of weights and serif, sans and semi serif varities. The layout flowed through the book changing on each page embracing the artwork and creating whitespace elements like crosses based on Hotre's work. For section pages black matt on gloss print was used in reference to his famous work 'Black Phoenix'.
Outcome
The book was well received and praised for 'moments of brillance'.
